When do I need reading glasses?
How often do we say: 'When my arm is no longer long enough'? Sooner or later, many of us realise that we may need reading glasses. Signs such as burning eyes after reading or headaches are clear signs that we can no longer avoid them. Although it may be unfamiliar at first, reading glasses can make everyday life much easier and can often look very stylish.
PRESBYOPIA - WHY MANY PEOPLE END UP NEEDING READING GLASSES
When the saying 'your arm is no longer long enough to read the newspaper' becomes true, presbyopia, the natural ageing process of the eye, has set in. This means that it becomes increasingly difficult to see close objects clearly. This is caused by the lens of the eye hardening and losing its ability to adapt to different distances - a process that progresses at different rates for different people.
But when exactly do you need reading glasses? There is no general answer and it does not necessarily depend on age. For some people, the ageing process of the eyes begins at the age of 30, while others do not notice any changes until the age of 35 or 40.
The demands of modern life place great demands on our eyes: They have to adapt quickly to different conditions and are exposed to many stresses. Screen work in particular puts a strain on our eyes, and there is often little time for regeneration as we spend much of our leisure time in front of screens. It remains to be seen how the figures for presbyopia will develop in the future.
READING GLASSES - STYLISH HELP FOR PRESBYOPIA
Suitable reading glasses help to compensate for presbyopia and are also a fashionable accessory. Reading glasses are usually single-vision glasses, optimised for a specific distance.
There are two main types of reading glasses: Half glasses allow you to wear them all the time, as you can look through the lower part, while you can see through the upper half when you look up. You can find our half glasses from INEEDYOU here. Full glasses, on the other hand, must be taken off when they are not needed . You can find our full glasses from INEEDYOU here. A glasses chain or strap can minimise the risk of misplacing or forgetting them. You can find out more about eyewear chains here.
SIGNS THAT YOU NEED READING GLASSES:
- Reading becomes tedious and your eyes tire quickly
- Burning eyes
- Headaches when reading
- Rapid fatigue when reading
- Letters become blurred
- The normal reading distance of 35 cm becomes insufficient
Interestingly, studies show that people who work and study for long periods of time may be more likely to need reading glasses. Frequent reading, constant computer use and a lack of daylight are possible causes of this.
